Director of Children and Youth Ministry (newly revised)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

To envision and implement programs that serve the children and youth of Covenant United

Methodist Church and the neighboring community.  These programs may include Sunday School classes, children and youth fellowship groups, and community events that create connections between the neighborhood and Covenant Church.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Commitment to Jesus Christ and to the mission of the United Methodist Church

  2. Calling and passion to work with children and youth

  3. Evidence of personal spiritual development and the ability to foster positive spiritual growth and development in others

  4. Understanding of urban/suburban families and the current trends in church ministries that provide for their spiritual needs

  5. Ability to utilize curriculum and teach lessons on Christian living for children and youth

  6. Demonstrated leadership ability as a self-starter and motivator of adult volunteers

  7. Degree or comparable education and experience in children and youth ministry

  8. Ability to recruit and engage children, youth, and their parents within the church family

  9. Proficient in time management, budget management, goal setting and organizational skills

  10. Desire and skills to expand the church’s children and youth outreach into the surrounding neighborhood

  11. Personal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual maturity needed for this sacred trust

  12. Proficient technology skills including familiarity with the internet and social media platforms for engagement, communication and instruction

  13. All required clearances including Safe Sanctuary Training

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To help children and youth grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ

  2. To help fulfill the Mission of the church through its children and youth ministry

  3. To participate in relevant trainings offered by the United Methodist Church

  4. To lead and coordinate opportunities for children and youth to be involved in worship, Christian education, and fellowship activities both within and outside of the church

  5. To expand the church’s ministry to children and youth by inviting those outside the church to join in fellowship with those in the church

  6. To recruit adult volunteers to work with children and youth and to guide and support them in that role

  7. To connect with parents of children and youth and to garner their support

  8. To communicate in a clear and timely manner to children, youth, and parents

  9. To build and sustain working relationships with community organizations, school administrations, other local churches, and faith-based organizations

  10. To assist the pastor with a confirmation course on an annual basis as warranted

  11. To involve children and youth in opportunities to connect with other young people at church camps and events

  12. To attend meetings with the Church Staff Team and the Nurture (Christian Education) Team

  13. To maintain high ethical standards and ensure the safety of all within their charge

  14. To provide sound teaching and training that enhances Biblical knowledge and addresses current issues for young people

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Director will set goals based on the above job description and be accountable to and supervised by the Senior Pastor.
